Coromandel Roads in a Rental Car: Routes, Day Trips and Tips
Quick summary: The Coromandel Peninsula is made for exploring by car, but its roads are slower than the map suggests. State Highway 25 loops around the coast with tight bends and hill climbs, State Highway 25A, the Kopu–Hikuai road, is the fastest crossing of the range, and the 309 Road is an unsealed shortcut that rental agreements may exclude. From a base at Hahei, Hot Water Beach, Whitianga and Tairua are all short drives.

What are the main roads like?
| Road | What to expect |
|---|---|
| SH25A, Kopu–Hikuai | Climbs and winds over the range; the quickest link to Mercury Bay |
| SH25, Thames coast | Narrow and winding along the shoreline, with sea views |
| SH25, Coromandel Town to Whitianga | Steep hill sections with tight bends |
| SH25, east coast | Rolling, with forest and beach stops |
| The 309 Road | Unsealed and narrow; often excluded by rental terms |
Slips and roadworks can close or slow sections after heavy rain, so check road conditions before setting out.
Which day trips can you take from Hahei?
| Trip | Highlights | Tours |
|---|---|---|
| Hot Water Beach | Dig a spa in the sand around low tide | Hot Water Beach tours |
| Whitianga | The harbour, the passenger ferry to Ferry Landing, boat trips | Boat cruise tours |
| Tairua | Paku hill views and the harbour | Kayak tours |
| The marine reserve | Snorkelling and sea caves from Hahei | Snorkel and dive tours, cave tours |
How should you time Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach?
Around the tides. Hot Water Beach needs the two hours either side of low tide, and Cathedral Cove’s beach is easiest to enjoy away from high tide. With a car, you can visit both on the same day if the tides line up. See tides and timing.
Is a small car better on the Coromandel?
Yes. A compact car or small SUV is easier on narrow bends and in busy beach car parks, especially at Hahei and Hot Water Beach in summer. Keep left on blind corners and use the pull-over bays to let faster traffic pass.
Where should you refuel?
In Thames, Whitianga, Tairua or Whangamatā, as fuel stops are limited elsewhere on the peninsula. Fill up before tackling the Thames coast or the hills north of Whitianga.
