Paddling to the Arch
A Cathedral Cove kayak tour paddles along the Coromandel coast from Hahei Beach to the cove — approximately 2–3 kilometres of coastal kayaking past sea caves, volcanic rock formations, blowholes, and the pohutukawa-lined cliffs of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve. The kayak provides the most intimate water-level approach to the cove — you paddle through the arch (in calm conditions), explore the sea caves that the larger boats cannot enter, and land on the beach at Cathedral Cove for the swimming and the photography.
The return paddle (or the option to walk back via the bush track while the guide returns the kayaks) creates a loop that covers both the water and the land perspectives in a single trip.
Guided tours provide the kayaks, the paddles, the life jackets, and the coastal narration. The guides know the sea caves, the wildlife spots (blue penguins nest along this coast, and the marine reserve supports a dense fish population), and the tidal conditions that determine which caves and passages are accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need kayaking experience?
No. The guided tours use stable sit-on-top or tandem kayaks and provide instruction. The coastal water is typically calm (the coast is sheltered from the prevailing swell), and the distance is short. Basic fitness and comfort on the water are sufficient.
How long is a Cathedral Cove kayak tour?
Typically 2.5–4 hours including instruction, the paddle to the cove, time at the beach, sea cave exploration, and the return. Morning tours offer the calmest conditions.
Can I kayak through the Cathedral Cove arch?
In calm conditions, yes — the kayak fits through the arch and the experience of paddling through the rock and emerging onto the beach is one of the most memorable moments on the Coromandel coast.
What if the sea is rough?
The guides assess conditions before departure. If the sea is too rough for the coastal route, the tour may be modified (a sheltered alternative) or cancelled with a refund or rebooking. The coast is generally calm in summer but conditions change.
